Getting to Know Yorkshire Dales Wedding Hair and Makeup
Tell us a little about yourselves and how Yorkshire Dales Wedding Hair and Makeup began.
We are two sisters, Jill and Jayne, who happily ran a salon together for 30 years. Over a couple of years, we welcomed an increasing number of local brides, and thanks to their recommendations, our wedding bookings continued to grow. For the last 4 years we have been full-time mobile wedding professionals. We also have three regular helpers who all worked with us at the salon and join us whenever we need extra hands for larger weddings.
Where are you based and which areas do you cover?
We are based in Ilkley and we travel up to an hour and a half in any direction.
What inspired you to specialise in bridal hair and makeup?
We just LOVE the work. It is just such a privilege to be part of a bride's special day. When we were working in a salon, we were always looking forward to the next wedding bookings, so we decided that is what we would concentrate on 24/7.

Fun, relaxed, and professional.

How would you describe your approach to bridal hair and makeup?
Our approach is to make everyone look the best version of themselves. We help brides and their family and friends to look and feel great on what is sometimes a very nervous day.
What can couples expect when they choose you for their wedding day?
A relaxed and friendly Yorkshire approach. Most women know what suits them and make them feel good. We are just there to make that happen, get the right look for them and make sure that it lasts all day.
What's the most important thing you want every bride to feel after working with you?
Confidence that we will give them what they want. We do that by offering good communication to whatever level the bride needs.
Which bridal hair or makeup trends are you loving at the moment?
We now have lots of Mothers of the Bride or Groom having trials! Women our age can get stuck in a rut and need a bit if extra help with their look, especially with makeup.
We are never quite sure what trends will come along, but whatever they are we will love them. It is wonderful to be in a job where everything changes. Products are improving all the time and we love the enthusiasm that you feel when you come back from a training course with a new skill.
Expert Wedding Advice
What's the biggest piece of advice you'd give couples when planning their wedding?
Try not to forget that the morning of the wedding is a third of your wedding day. It needs to be a special and memorable morning.
What's your top tip for couples who have just got engaged?
It is never too early to book the professional that you think fits you. It is awful when we get an email from a bride who has found us and thinks that we are the right people for her when we are already booked on her wedding date.
Behind the Scenes
Take us behind the scenes – what does a typical wedding morning look like for you?
Jayne and I always text each other to say, "I'm up," an hour before setting off, whether it's a long journey or a short one. Once we arrive, we'll take time for our traditional breakfast picnic in the car and then message the bride to let her know we're outside, so she can relax and enjoy her morning knowing we've arrived. We do all of the fun stuff before packing up, usually with a tear in our eyes as she puts on her veil or headdress. Seeing the bride's face when she is ready is the most rewarding part of the job!
What's been your most memorable wedding day moment?
Doing my own daughter’s bridal makeup and watching Jayne style her hair.
Weddings rarely go exactly to plan! What's one unexpected challenge you've overcome?
We encounter many challenges; brides forgetting to pack their veils or headdresses, a breakout of unexpected spots, etc. These are the reasons to have wedding professionals. We always have something in our pack that will help, from pearl pins and heavy coverage creams to a calming voice.
What is something couples might be surprised to learn about your role?
We are often on the floor fastening shoes, fitting corsages and necklaces and often doing the washing up so the family can come back to somewhere tidy. It is all part of the day.

What do you love most about weddings in the Yorkshire Dales?
We are all five of us Yorkshire ladies, two of us are farmers, so we all love the Dales.
Why do you think countryside wedding venues continue to be so popular?
Nature gives a calmness and a relaxed vibe. You arrive at The Gamekeeper's Inn and look out of the bedroom windows onto every colour of green imaginable. Everyone is welcomed with a wonderful Yorkshire warmth.
How can couples make the most of a Yorkshire Dales wedding?
The Gamekeeper’s Inn is in an area that a lot of our city brides come to for their mini-moon. You can stay and relax for the days around the wedding and enjoy the amazing local area.
What do you enjoy most about weddings at The Gamekeeper's Inn?
We have worked at The Gamekeeper's Inn numerous times. We love coming to help brides get ready there. The staff are amazing, always helpful, and make everything run like clockwork.
What advice would you give to couples planning a countryside wedding?
Stay for as long as you can and see this part of Yorkshire.
